Richard Miller, Senior Consultant at Arcus Global
We are proud to announce that Thomas Dowell, AWS degree apprentice here at Arcus Global, is nominated for a prestigious Tech Industry Gold award.
Thomas has been employed within the Amazon Web Services division to work on a number of strategic projects. These are centred around voice automation technologies, which are primarily used in contact centres. Most recently, this technology has been used by healthcare organisations faced with unprecedented pressure due to COVID-19. Thomas has played a pivotal and leading role in the development of two solutions.
The first is an automated system for making phone calls to vulnerable members of the public to see if they require assistance and, if so, ask what kind of help they need. This has since been re-purposed for the NHS to help free hospital beds, using AI techniques to speak to care homes about their bed availability. A large number of care homes are called with this system on a daily basis, allowing beds to be freed quicker than if a person had made the calls manually.
The second helps an ambulance service reduce the increased pressure on their call handlers, through the use of AI, to ask details about the patient before the call reaches a human. This helps to prioritise calls and reduces the workload for staff, allowing more calls to be handled in a shorter period.
Thomas has shown a dedication to the work ensuring that tight timescales are met, whilst bringing a fresh innovative flair to the team and shaping the solution itself. He has aligned himself with the needs of our customers, putting himself in their shoes and taking a proactive approach to solving problems instead of simply following the brief. What Thomas has produced has exceeded the expectations of the clients and has created further opportunities for the team. All of this proves to us how valuable Thomas is to the team. He delivers much more than can be expected of a degree apprentice.
Here is what Thomas had to say on being nominated:
“Until our AWS practice director Tim told me that my course leader had nominated me for this award, I wasn’t aware of the Tech Industry Gold event. I think not knowing about the event beforehand makes my nomination more meaningful, because I wasn’t aiming towards it. I was simply getting on with work and coursework, aiming to benefit my workplace and myself. To know that I’ve stood out among other apprentices is really special.
Working full-time in Arcus’ AWS division while working towards my degree puts me in a perfect place, much more than if I were at university full-time. I’m fully immersed in the ever-changing services AWS offers, and I help to implement modern practices that benefit peoples’ lives. Every day, I learn something new from my colleagues and contribute to real-world solutions that aid the public sector.”
We are immensely proud of Thomas and his achievements so far, and we can’t wait to see what his future will bring.
